Have you ever heard of sand baths before? If you think it’s taking a bath in sand – you’ve got it right! In Japan, a lot of hot springs (called onsen in Japanese) can be found, but in Ibusuki, Kyushu, they pride in their unique type of “hot spring” found nowhere else in Japan but here: natural hot sand baths!
When taking a sand bath, bathers wear a yukata (bath robe) and lie down face up on the sand before being buried with more of the hot sand, leaving only your face and head visible. This is especially popular with foreign tourists who do not want to be completely naked when going for a dip in hot springs. Because of its detoxing effect as well as being an aid to dieting and having beautiful skin, this kind of hot spring is also popular with women of all ages.
This time, we present to you a tour around southern Kyushu which includes this must-experience sand bath. Have a look!
