I think most of you who are the fan of Japan travel may already know the places I am going to talk about today which are Dazaifu and Yanagawa in Fukuoka.

When you are in Fukuoka, it is a must-visit place that most of the people would fo to check it out. I, myself, have been to these 2 places a lot of times but never get bored. One is the lively famous shrine full of tourists and another is the peaceful place where you can explore by the boat ride.

How to get there

You can get access very easily to Dazaifu and Yanagawa by Nishitetsu train from Tenjin Station in Downtown Fukuoka.

There are the special trains called “Suito” which operate to Yanagawa and “Tabito” which operate to Dazaifu.

This special train combines the image of the spots into the luxurious design. You would feel like you already arrived at the moment you are on the train.

Then here we arrive at Dazaifu

Along the way from the station, there are many gift and snack shops. Must try here is “Umegae-Mochi” the red bean grill mochi symbol of Dazaifu. And you also should check out Starbuck shop here as well. Their interior is quite unique.

The Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is where Sugawara no Michizane, known as the god of learning, is worshipped. As many as 7 million people pay homage here, from locals to visitors from all over the country. A lot of students can be seen in the area particularly during examination season in order to pray for passing their exams.

The plum tree at the right of Honden (main shrine). Known as Tobiume (the flying plum tree), legend has it that after Michizane left Kyoto for a life in exile, this particular tree yearned so much for him that, uprooting himself, it flew to reunite with him in Dazaifu. This plum tree usually bloomed from mid-February to the beginning of March.

After Dazaifu, here we come at Yanagawa

Yanagawa city is also known as “Venice of Fukuoka” as there are many canals. The locals here utilize the water of the canal for consumption, agriculture, and transportation.

So let’s ride.

Along the way the boatman was guiding us to see local houses, historical places and the nature. He also sing a song which is totally make up the mood.

The local food that you must try here in Yanagawa is Grill Eel on rice. You can find the restaurants everywhere at the main street.
