Many travelers are interested in exploring historical townscapes and artistic cityscapes. Here we would like to introduce you to some Old to Modern Townscapes in Kyushu.

1. Yoshinogari Historical Park, Saga

Yoshinogari is mostly rural farmland was home to a large ancient civilization during the Yayoi period, going back over 2,000 years. Though there have been other Yayoi ruins discovered around the country, the site at Yoshinogari is by far biggest.

2. Mamedamachi town, Oita

Mamedamachi flourished tremendously under the direct control of the Tokugawa shogunate between 1603 and 1868 during the Edo period. There still remains some of the oldest merchant buildings and domain storehouses in the country – making it one of the most iconic tourist destinations in Hita City.

3. Sakuranobaba Josaien, Kumamoto

Josaien is located in Sakuranobaba, at the foot of Kumamoto Castle. It is a popular tourist attraction designed to enhance the appeal of the old castle town and convey to visitors the food, history and cultural traditions of the region.

4. Kitsuki Samurai Residences, Oita

Kitsuki is known as Kyushu’s “Little Kyoto” and is famous for its unique sandwich style township. The old township is composed of two hilltops running side by side where the samurai residences stood and a lower row of merchant shops sandwiched by the two hills.

5. Dejima, Nagasaki

Walk around Dejima, an island which used to be the only gateway to Western Europe about 400 years ago, dressed in a Japanese kimono!

6. Mimitsu Town, Miyazaki

The streets of the white walls from the Edo period to the Meiji period remained Mimitsu town which prospered as a port town was the trade and cultural gateway to Kyoto. The old houses were designated as important historical building preservation area.

7. Gunkanjima, Nagasaki

Gunkanjima once flourished as a coal-mining island in Meiji era with row upon row of high-rise apartment buildings. Now it is uninhabited and only accessible by boat; you can only go ashore with a group tour. This is a much-talked-about spot which is on the list of World Heritage Sites.

8. Bungo Takada Showa no Machi, Oita

Bungotakada “Showa no Machi” re-create the vibrancy and the authentic feel of the warm and nostalgic 50’s in Japan. Walk around the city filled with retro billboards and structures, it is as if you have traveled through time back to the Showa period.

9. Oshima Island, Konoura townscape (神浦の町並み), Nagasaki

The old town of wooden architecture is contiguous with eaves has been also left now from the Edo period. Take a look at the generations of history to elaborate bracket of the houses. Here the streets are really great.

10. Yunotsubo Kaido, Yufuin town, Oita

“Yunotsubo” is a street near Yufuin Station which gives off the atmosphere of the old Japan town. It is filled with a variety of shops which sell Yufuin and Oita specialty products, food, souvenirs, and many more. It is always packed with tourists.

11. Beppu town, Oita

Yukemuri Observatory offers the hot steam coming out of the houses of the onsen town and also a great view of the of the mountain.

12. Mount Inasa, Nagasaki

Spot with superb panoramic night views of Nagasaki by taking the ropeway for 5 min. and you’ll arrive at the observation platform. Night view spot overlooking downtown area of Nagasaki counted as one of the new best three night views in the world, along with Monaco and Hong Kong.

13. Tenjin, Fukuoka

Tenjin area is a downtown of Fukuoka city, the largest and busiest city on Kyushu island. There are lots of great things to do in Tenjin like shopping, especially things revolving around food.

14. Yatai, Fukuoka

Yatai (food stalls) is a townscape rarely to find in Japan but in Fukuoka city, it is on the downtown’s street. Let’s all eat and drink and be merry under a cozy yatai experience!

15. Huis Ten Bosch, Nagasaki

“Huis ten Bosch” is a park surrounded by beautiful and pleasant views and flowers.  The buildings recreate old Dutch buildings. There are also different attractions, markets, and restaurants to visit. This is a place where you can see the nice ancient time for you far away from civilization.
